-it was almost the end of their lunch break -and he hadn’t come up from her shoulder. -she still hadn’t asked what was wrong -knowing sometimes that only made things worse. -she just stayed on her phone scrolling -and occasionally reached over for some of the chips she had out. -they were the only ones who used the break room at this time, so they had enough privacy. -which she was a bit relieved, not knowing how someone would interpret her sitting on his lap. -but they knew what was between them. -how he helped her get through a tough moment last year. -and how this wasn’t just a payback obligation -but rather they had gotten close in a way that was beyond the work spouse label. -they hadn’t defined what the connection was and didn’t bother. -so when his alarm went off to get back to work, she kissed his temple, hopped off and then squeezed his shoulder -letting him know if he needed anything else she’d be there.
